The Central Committee and other members of the FĽM are currently exposed to questions concerning the placement of the chairman of Socialisti.sk movement, Artur Bekmatov, on the SMER – SSD party’s candidate list. First of all, let me remind you that the FĽM is an independent civic association whose mission is to bring together young people who are committed to the radical left.
In the past, we have worked closely with Socialisti.sk movement. We have participated in the organisation of anti-fascist events; we have spoken together at protests for better working conditions, for the protection of the Earth, and for the rights of LGBT people. We initiated a collection for Syria and demonstrated in front of the Israeli embassy. We have not hesitated to support the activities of the Socialisti.sk movement, which are in line with our values.
It is right to note that the FĽM does not bear any responsibility for the decisions of the Socialisti.sk movement. Our loose cooperation to date does not make the FĽM the movement’s supreme advisory body or its grey eminence. We appreciate Artur Bekmatov’s openness with which he announced his candidature to the FĽM Central Committee before the official announcement. The Central Committee accepted this news as a decision of the movement and its chairman, which the FĽM will not and cannot influence.
The FĽM is not involved in the election campaign in favour of any of the political parties standing for election. We reiterate that we are an independent association of the young radical left. We are not a political movement, nor do we belong to one. We will continue to act in accordance with our values in the direction of building a socially just society.
Lenka Želonková, President of the FĽM
